As the 19th World Cup football games prepare to take place on the continent of Africa for the first time, the theme of the next three 53 Works of Art events that lead up to June 2010 is: "Football | Soccer" - a celebration of the games in Africa.
Over the next 8 months [3 events], accomplished and renowned sculptors create 53 unique Works of Art capturing the essence of the game. 53 represents the number of countries in Africa and when complete the collection will be a monument and exhibition of history telling the story of football in Africa and celebrating the game and World Cup occasion on the continent for the first time.
Each of the three events scheduled between now and June 2010 will unveil the growing number of pieces as they build up to 53 Works of Art. Piece-by-piece the finished Work[s] of Art will join the exhibition, replacing the existing exhibition of African art and art inspired by Africa.
Each of the Works of Art are for sale, however the body of work will also stand as an exhibition that also tells the story of the history of the game in Africa and will be open to the public for viewing.
